Have you been to Manitou Springs?

Have you tried the water?

Mantiou Springs is a town at the foot of Pikes Peak, known for the beautiful surrounding landscape and mineral springs.

If you’ve visited Manitou Springs and walked through the downtown area you may have noticed one of the many natural springs throughout the walk.

The spring water of Manitou Springs originates from two sources, the deep-seated waters of the Rampart Range and Ute Pass, and the water runs  below the surface of the town through cavernous drainage systems called karst aquifers. Limestone in the water dissolves and resulting carbonic acid, or carbon dioxide, making the water somewhat effervescent. The water rises to the surface naturally. This process is an artesian process where as water rises through layers of rock it picks up minerals and soda, or sodium bicarbonate. Some of the spring water also comes from “surface” waters from the watershed basins of Fountain Creek and Williams Canyon. Each spring has a different mineral content and because of that, a different taste.

The various springs you may have encountered on your stroll include:

  • 7 Minute Spring
  • Cheyenne Spring House
  • Iron Spring Geyser
  • Navajo Spring
  • Shoshone Spring
  • Soda Spring (not currently available)
  • Stratton Spring
  • Twin Spring
  • Ute Chief Spring (not currently available)
